We started in 2005 as Teamsters Rx, the pharmacy benefits manager (PBM) for our own New England-based fund. Our new name—Allegiant Rx—reflects our growth and our mission. We not only serve as the PBM for Union funds, but also for employer-sponsored plans. Nationally we represent more than 75,000 covered lives under the umbrella of 10 independent funds. That’s why we say, “Prescription benefits for all.”

Most importantly, we continue to be a not-for-profit pharmacy benefit manager that derives no income from the sale of prescription drugs. Our mission aligns with our partners’ goals of providing a quality benefit while controlling costs.

Pharmacy costs are rising faster than general medical costs. In 2015, the cost of prescription drugs represented about 17% of total medical costs. By 2018, it is projected to be 25% of total costs. Therefore, it’s critical to have a PBM that will be your partner in managing the benefit in the most cost-effective manner.

• Strength in numbers. Our size gives us the bargaining power to negotiate the best prescription prices possible. We aggressively negotiate to lower the cost of brand-name and generic prescription drugs.
• We manage the pharmacy benefits. We contract with leading providers of pharmacy services, allowing us access to the broadest retail pharmacy network to process claims, and to fill and deliver drugs provided through mail order. As the PBM, we focus on providing high-quality care while managing access to unnecessary and expensive drugs.
• We demand that the most effective and appropriate therapies be provided in the most efficient and cost-effective manner. As “gatekeepers” for our partners’ prescription plans, we eliminate the skyrocketing costs associated with unmanaged plans.
